Providing a Better Retaining Wall Construction Experience

A correctly built retaining wall should include more than level blocks and an attractive finished face. Ask the contractor to explain—and include in writing—how the hidden structural components will be handled.

Look for:

  • Proper footing excavation
  • A deep, mechanically compacted gravel foundation
  • Base material compacted in multiple lifts
  • Perforated drainpipe with positive discharge
  • Clean drainage aggregate behind the wall
  • Geogrid reinforcement where required
  • The correct wall system for the height and load
  • Level courses, consistent setbacks and tight joints
  • Engineering and permits when required

Wall & Company incorporates these details according to the wall and site conditions rather than treating drainage or reinforcement as afterthoughts. Red flags include native soil placed directly behind the wall, unclear drainage plans, single-pass compaction or a contractor unable to describe the foundation.

Review Wall & Company’s retaining-wall construction standards.

For early planning, professionally installed retaining walls often cost about $30–$60 per square foot of exposed wall face. Taller, engineered or difficult-access walls can cost substantially more.

The final price depends on:

  • Wall length and height
  • Block or stone system
  • Excavation and soil removal
  • Equipment access
  • Foundation depth
  • Drainage and backfill
  • Geogrid reinforcement
  • Engineering, curves, steps and lighting

A lower price may reflect less excavation, a thinner base, minimal drainage or omitted reinforcement—not simply a better deal. Wall & Company builds retaining walls with properly prepared foundations, multi-lift compaction, clean drainage aggregate, site-specific drainage and geogrid where required. Because much of that work is buried, compare the entire construction scope rather than price alone.

Learn what affects retaining-wall cost and performance.

Retaining-wall quotes can differ by thousands of dollars because two walls that look identical may be constructed very differently below and behind the blocks.

Major pricing differences include:

  • Depth of excavation
  • Thickness and compaction of the gravel foundation
  • Drainpipe and clean drainage aggregate
  • Backfill material
  • Geogrid reinforcement
  • Wall alignment and craftsmanship
  • Engineering, access and site conditions

Wall & Company properly excavates for the foundation, compacts gravel in multiple lifts, installs drainage designed for the property, uses clean drainage aggregate and adds geogrid when required. These steps require additional materials, equipment and labor but help the wall remain straight and stable for decades.

A cheaper quote may omit work that becomes invisible after installation. Compare written specifications—not just wall dimensions, block style and total price.

What Makes Wall & Company's Installation Better?

Hidden Details Determine How Long Your Retaining Wall Will Last

Engineered Base Preparation

Every retaining wall starts with a properly compacted gravel foundation. A solid base keeps the wall level and stable for decades.

Integrated Drainage System

Drain rock and perforated pipe behind the wall relieve water pressure before it can cause movement or failure.

Multi-Lift Backfill Compation

Backfill is compacted in lifts rather than dumped all at once, minimizing settling and protecting the wall over time.
