Spokane Boulder Wall Installation

Providing a Better Boulder Wall Construction Experience

Common Boulder Wall Questions and Answers

Boulder wall quotes vary because walls with the same visible dimensions can involve very different amounts of work beneath, behind and between the stones. Price differences often reflect:

  • Excavation and foundation preparation
  • Boulder quality, size and selection
  • Time spent positioning and interlocking individual stones
  • Drainage, backfill and layered compaction
  • Equipment time, hauling, materials and finish work

Wall & Company takes additional steps intended to improve long-term stability. These include properly preparing the foundation, selecting boulders for their shape and application, carefully positioning each stone, overlapping boulders so they work together, managing drainage and using appropriate backfill compacted in manageable layers.

A lower quote may reduce or omit some of this hidden work. When comparing proposals, look beyond wall length, height and stone appearance. Compare exactly how each contractor will prepare, drain, build and finish the wall.

A professionally installed boulder wall commonly costs between $35 to $65 per square foot of exposed wall face, although premium stone, difficult sites, or complex designs can push the price higher. For example, a wall 40 feet long and 3 feet high has 120 square feet of face, creating a rough starting range of $3,000 to $6,000.

See HomeGuide for pricing References

Your actual price will depend on:

  • Wall length and height
  • Boulder type, size, and availability
  • Excavation and soil removal
  • Equipment access
  • Foundation and drainage requirements
  • Curves, steps, terraces, or integrated landscaping
  • Engineering and permits

Be cautious when comparing estimates. A lower proposal may omit sufficient excavation, a properly prepared foundation, drainage stone, filter fabric, or careful boulder placement. Those differences may not be visible when the wall is new, but they greatly affect its long-term stability. The most reliable price comes from an on-site evaluation and a clearly defined scope of work.

Neither option is universally better. The right choice depends on the site, desired appearance, available space, and structural requirements.

Choose a boulder wall when you want:

  • A natural, substantial appearance
  • A wall that blends into the landscape
  • Exceptional durability
  • Irregular curves or planting pockets
  • Efficient installation where heavy equipment has good access

Choose a block retaining wall when you want:

  • A clean, uniform appearance
  • A narrower wall footprint
  • Precise corners, steps, columns, or tight curves
  • An engineered system for taller or heavily loaded walls
  • Consistent colors and textures

Both systems can perform exceptionally well when properly designed and installed. Boulder walls rely on the weight, selection, interlocking placement, and setback of the stone. Block walls depend on correct base preparation, drainage, compaction, course alignment, and geogrid reinforcement where required.

See: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association

The best decision should follow an evaluation of the slope, soil, drainage, equipment access, available space, and loads above the wall.

A properly designed and installed boulder wall can reasonably last 50 to 100 years or longer. The stone itself may endure for generations; premature failure usually results from problems beneath or behind the boulders rather than deterioration of the material.

See Natural-stone retaining-wall guidance

Long-term performance depends on:

  • Excavating to stable soil
  • Building a properly graded and compacted foundation
  • Selecting suitable boulders
  • Placing the largest stones at the base
  • Interlocking rather than simply stacking the boulders
  • Setting the wall back into the slope
  • Installing drainage stone, filter fabric, and drainpipe where needed
  • Managing runoff above the wall

Poor drainage is one of the greatest threats. Trapped water increases soil pressure, encourages erosion, and worsens freeze-thaw movement. Homeowners should periodically check for pooling water, soil washing through gaps, settlement, or shifting stones. When the foundation, placement, and drainage are handled correctly, a boulder wall is a long-term landscape structure—not a feature that should require routine rebuilding.

Wall and Co came out and did some sprinklers, a fence, and some lawn for us. They were extremely responsive and efficient. We have loved having a sprinkler system. We did have a leaking issue a few years in and they were so quick to call and support. Exceptional customer service.

This company built a series of keystone block walls on our property and the results were excellent. The workman on the job site were consistently courteous and considerate, they took care to avoid any disruptions to our traffic at the house, always communicated well and in fact were delightful young men to associate with. The job site was cleaned when complete. An outstanding company and we would highly recommend them!

Wall & Co. did an outstanding job in developing a hardscape around our new build. From design to execution, Adam, Spencer, and his team were extremely professional, flexible, attentive, personable, and timely. They transformed the perimeter of our house from a dust and weed scape to an artistic rock scape. We anticipate having the Wall & Co. crew return to our project and help us finish our "vision".

Wow. They took my dying, poorly built retaining wall and quickly turned it into an eye catching piece of art. The wall came down and the new one went up in 2-3 days. Very professional. Very hardworking. Their rock stackers were so good and impressive. Can't recommend enough

Wall and Company did an amazing job installing a large retaining wall along the side of our property line bordering a neighbor. The area was very difficult to access with their equipment, but their highly skilled workers made it happen. The entire work crew were phenomenal to work with. Wall also did extensive repair of our irrigation system, installed a beautiful cedar fence, and landscaped the backyard. We are very thankful for the support and service they provided.

We are so pleased with the whole experience and the people of Wall and Company! Each person we interacted with was friendly, professional, conscientious and KIND. We can't say "thank you" enough for the thoughtful careful way everything was done. We met with Greg and Adam who spent time listening to our issues and concerns. We received bids from several other companies but chose Wall and Company based our our interactions with Greg and Adam. Then Adam brought Spencer and Trevor to do a walk around and really go over our project allowing us plenty of time to ask questions and get clarification. Every single day Spencer, Trevor and later Andrew showed up on time, ready to work and I mean THEY WORKED! We marveled at their stamina! It was evident they all really liked the work and took pride in doing a good job, day after day. They took great care to protect our property and allow us easy access while the job was in progress, placing equipment, supplies and tools off to the side and covering our lawn with large boards so the machines did minimal damage to the grass. Care, thoughtful design and conscientious work went into each aspect of our project. These guys are the real deal! We liked what they were doing so much that we added on several more items to be completed while they were here. We are so happy we did! The place looks absolutely amazing and our neighbors are so impressed. In fact one of our neighbors is so impressed he is meeting with Adam later this week for his own project estimate. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention how great Melanie is in the office. If you need something, call her. She returns your calls and is on top of things. Thank you Wall and Company: Greg, Adam, Spencer, Trevor, Melanie and Andrew! You are so skilled in what you do and more importantly the kindest, most professional group we have worked with in Spokane!

We had used Wall and Company for our initial landscaping and were excited to have them back for another project we designed. As we expected the crew was courteous, professional, knowledgeable, punctual, and an absolute delight to work with. We would recommend Wall and Company to anyone wanting a no nonsense company that will respect your property, give you a fair price, and deliver what they quoted.
