An outdoor pool transforms your backyard into a private retreat for relaxation, recreation, and entertaining. A well-designed pool integrates seamlessly with your landscape, creating a cohesive and inviting environment. The result is a custom pool that enhances both enjoyment and property value.

What to Know About Custom Pools

When it comes to types of pools, there are three major categories:  Gunite, Vinyl-Lined and Fiberglass.  Each typeof pool has it’s strengths, depending on your  vision, space requirements and desired initial investment. At Wall and Company, we’ll explain your options clearly and with no pressure.

When considering pools in Spokane, WA and Coeur d’Alene, ID – there are three major types, each with their unique benefits.  Things to consider include: Initial investment, longevity, flexibility (is it customizable?), maintenance, and your property’s accessibility.

  • Gunite Pools:  Long-lasting, versatile and fully customizable.  Gunite pools are installed by applying a mix of concrete and sand over a rebar framework, allowing for customizable shapes and durable, long-lasting structures.  Since they aren’t pre-manufactured , they can be installed in areas where overhead accessibility may be an issue.
  • Vinyl-Lined Pools:  Customizable, with lower initial investment. Vinyl pools use a steel, aluminum, or polymer frame with a vinyl liner. Their shape can be customized for many applications and their initial investment can often (not always) be lower than a Gunite pool.  Over time, the vinyl liner may need replacing with UV rays and wear.
  • Fiberglass Pools:  Faster installation, lower initial investment, limited options. Fiberglass pools are pre-molded in a factory and installed as a single piece. They’re relatively quick to install, have a smooth, non-porous surface that resists algae, and can require less maintenance, and can require a smaller initial investment.  Fiberglass pools are limited in shape and size, and their pre-fabricated nature can prevent installation in tight or overhead sensitive areas.

When installing a pool in our area, there are several things that can affect the size of your initial and ongoing investment.

  • Type of Pool – Initial Investment: The type of pool you select will be the largest determiner of your investment.  All pools require excavation, as well as plumbing and electrical work during installation.  However, each type of pool can require varying levels of ‘building’ during the installation process. In general, the more custom you’d like your pool to be, the larger the initial investment.  For instance, Gunite Pools offer nearly limitless customization, and as a result tend to require a larger initial investment.  Fiberglass Pools on the other hand  typically require much less in the way of installation hours, reducing your installation investment.  However, not all properties can accommodate fiberglass pools, and they’re limited in shapes and sizes.
  • Type of Pool – Ongoing  Investment: Some pools require more ongoing, regular maintenance than others.  Additionally, Vinyl-Lined pools will often require vinyl replacement over time, adding to the cost.  Your Wall and Company consultant can provide you with an estimated ongoing investment table, showing you what you can expect from each type of pool.
  • Our Location in the Inland Northwest: The window for installing pools in Spokane, WA and Coeur d’Alene, ID is much smaller than say, in southern California.  Here in the Inland Northwest, we have about 5-6 good months to install pools due to ground conditions, whereas in warmer climates, pools can be installed year ’round. This limited window means that all of our area’s pool installation companies including Wall and Company are working with less time available, limiting the number of pools we can install.  Reserving your installation early can help make sure you have your pool ready to enjoy when you’d like, and may lock in favorable pricing.
